What is Appropriate Content for a Business Facebook Page?

Most businesses these days have Facebook pages.  While we all know what not to put on our personal Facebook page – dates you will be on vacation, complaints about your boss, your home address – it is harder to know what kind of posts are appropriate for your business page.  While the following list is certainly not exhaustive, it should give you an idea of what your business posts should – or should not – contain.

  1. If someone wants to read ads, they can pick up a circular at the grocery store.  You can promote your business without making your page look like an insert from the Sunday paper.
  2. Have fun but not too much fun.  It’s fine to insert some humor into your posts but keep it clean and stay away from touchy subjects that may offend.
  3. Don’t diss your competitors.  You don’t have to repost their posts or give them kudos for their newest innovation but remember what your mother told you, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
  4. Leave them wanting more.  Most experts agree that one to four posts a day are fine but any more than that and you risk being not only unlikeable but “unliked,” as well!
  5. Don’t let your Facebook page become a desert landscape.  If someone makes an effort to visit your site, there is nothing more frustrating than to find no updates since the last time they visited.  Especially if the last time they visited was a month ago!
  6. Novels are for libraries.  Short posts are best.  There are exceptions but that’s why they are called exceptions.
  7. If you aren’t a pet store or a zoo, animal pictures should probably be reserved for your personal page.
  8. If someone responds to a post, acknowledge that response.  If a person took time to comment on something you wrote about, not taking the time to thank them is a big mistake.
  9. Don’t be seen as a business that doesn’t know how to share.  Reposting content from other Facebook pages is important.  If you promote other pages, chances are they will do the same.  Also, if you want to be seen as an industry authority, your Facebook page can’t exist in a vacuum.
  10. It’s not about you.  Save the dreaded “I” in your business posts.  People visit your page to see what is going on with your brand, not the brand’s Facebook administrator!
