Prevention is Key to Avoiding Exercise-Related Injuries

Prevention is always the best option when it comes to exercise-related injuries. However, if you find yourself in need of care, a chiropractor is one of your best options.

Through the use of arm, leg, neck and spine adjustments, chiropractors help increase blood flow to the affected area and help to align the bones surrounding muscles, ligaments and tendons to reduce tension on the injury. These adjustments not only speed recovery, they also increase the flexibility of joints in the long term.

Again, however, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and verywellfit.com offers tips for preventing exercise-related injury in Seven Ways to Prevent Exercise Injury. Here are just a few of those tips:

  • Start slowly and increase gradually
  • Warm up before exercise
  • Dress for your sport
  • Listen to your body

If you are injured while exercising, Zurek Chiropractic can help. Call us at 402-504-3434 and we’ll get you back in the game.

Chiropractic Care for Exercise-Related Injuries

Exercise plays a significant role in helping a person remain healthy and happy. Regular exercise also helps to prevent a number of diseases, improves mood and increases energy levels.

Unfortunately, exercise-related injuries often sideline individuals looking to remain active. Some of the most common exercise injuries include:

  • Pulled or strained muscles
  • Overuse or overexertion injuries
  • Inflammation or pain under the knee cap (runner’s knee)
  • Inflammation of the tissues on the bottom of the foot (plantar fasciitis)
  • Inflammation or irritation of the tendons in the arms or elbows (tennis elbow)
  • Pain on the front of the calf (shin splints)

Thankfully, chiropractic care is a great way to get back in the exercise game following an injury, allowing you to continue to reap the benefits of an active lifestyle. This is true no matter what your age or fitness level.

Most sports injuries are related to musculoskeletal issues. While some injuries can be treated with just rest, ice, compression and elevation, others may require chiropractic care to combat pain and reduce inflammation. A chiropractor can perform adjustments and other treatment that will help aid the recovery process.

Of course, prevention is always the best option when it comes to exercise injuries. Here are just some of the ways to make sure that you avoid succumbing to an exercise-related injury in the first place.

  1. Start slow. Give your body the time to adjust. Begin by exercising one or two non-consecutive days a week, gradually increasing the frequency and intensity of your workouts. This will help to prevent muscles tears and repetitive stress injuries.
  2. Warm up. Aim for approximately 10 minutes of warm up before you begin exercising. Muscles that have been warmed up are less likely to tear. If you are doing resistance training, pay special attention to warming up your ankle, hip, knee, shoulder and wrist joints.
  3. Stretch. Stretching muscles and joints before and after exercise will help to relax tight muscles and improve flexibility over time. Never bounce when you stretch and take care to breathe deeply while stretching.
  4. Don’t go it alone. Consult with a trainer before using equipment or free weights. This allows you to avoid injury and see better results.

Unfortunately, no matter how careful you are, exercise-related injuries can still happen. While many people are tempted to mask the pain with medication, chiropractic care is a safer and much more effective option.

Chiropractic Care and the Quest for a Good Night’s Sleep

The Centers for Disease Control reports that about one-third of Americans aren’t getting enough shut-eye. This is an alarming statistic given that chronic sleeplessness takes a serious toll on a person’s health and well-being, contributing to a whole host of illnesses and diseases, including heart disease, mood disorders and weight gain.

While many people turn to over-the-counter and prescription sleep aids, there is an alternative. Chiropractic care is a proven method for helping people get the recommended amount of sleep. Equally important is that it does so without the use of medications that leave you groggy and unable to function at your highest level.

Chiropractic care relieves pain and tension in your spine and enhances the functioning of your central nervous system, helping to reduce insomnia and allowing you to get a more restorative sleep. It does this by addressing the problems at the root of sleepless nights. These include things like breathing problems, back pain and restless leg syndrome.

Chronic back and neck pain also interfere with a person’s ability to get enough sleep. Among the most common issues related to back and neck pain are damaged ligaments and tendons, impinged nerves, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis and strained muscles. At Zurek Chiropractic, we will work to identify the root of your sleeplessness and then develop a treatment plan to address those issues.

Not only can chiropractors diagnose and treat spinal issues related to poor sleep, they also can offer practical suggestions for getting better sleep. For example, what sleep position works best for you and what type of pillow and mattress to use.

Unfortunately, many people believe that restless nights are something they simply have to live with. Others are so used to functioning on just a few hours a sleep, it seems normal to them. Further, most of us are so familiar with the negative effects of poor quality sleep, we have forgotten what a good night’s sleep feels like.

What follows are just some of the many mental and physical benefits of a good night’s sleep:

  1. Faster reaction times
  2. Balanced hormone levels
  3. Better memory
  4. Longer attention span
  5. Lower stress levels
  6. A reduction in inflammation
  7. Increased creativity
  8. Improved athletic performance
  9. Healthier weight
  10. Improved decision making
  11. Less depression

Research has repeatedly shown that chiropractic adjustments help to improve the body’s ability to get the amount and type of sleep so critical to optimal functioning. And since sleep is the foundation of good health—and sleep problems a contributing factor to poor health—seeing a chiropractor for sleep disturbances will make a huge difference in your overall quality of life.

Is Your Sleeping Position Giving You a Pain in the Neck?

Each year, 15 percent of Americans will suffer from some form of neck pain. In fact, most people will experience a stiff neck at some point in their life. While a trip to the chiropractor may be necessary in many cases, the occasional stiff neck can be caused by a variety of factors that aren’t particularly serious. One of the most common culprits is sleeping in the wrong position.

The good news is that you can prevent a painful crick in the neck by avoiding some common bedtime mistakes. Sleep.org published an article, How to Prevent Neck Pain While Sleeping, in which it outlines some of the causes of sleep-induced neck pain.

  1. Pillows that do not comfortably mold to the shape of your neck
  2. Poor sleep habits
  3. Sleeping on your stomach
  4. Weak or stiff muscles

When it comes to combatting neck pain, sleep issues are fairly easy to correct. However, if you believe that your neck pain is caused by something more serious, a trip to the chiropractor is in order.

Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common complaint. Each year, almost 15 percent of Americans report suffering from some degree of neck pain.

The fact that so many individuals suffer from neck pain is no surprise when you consider that the neck, also referred to as the cervical spine, supports the full weight of a person’s head—about 12 pounds—and allows the head to move in almost every direction.

The flexibility of the neck is one of the reasons why it is so susceptible to pain and injury. Much of this has to do with biomechanics. Accidents, long periods of sitting, repetitive moving and general wear and tear impact the neck and the seven small vertebrae contained within.

One of the most effective pain treatments for the neck is chiropractic care. Research shows that individuals with chronic neck pain reported significant improvement following chiropractic treatment.

It is likely that almost everyone will experience a stiff neck at some point in their life and, in such cases, that stiffness can be treated at home. However, there is a significant difference between the occasional stiff neck caused by sleeping in the wrong position or a long day of driving. So, when do you know if your neck pain warrants a visit to the chiropractor?

What follows some general guidelines for when your neck pain requires a trip to the chiropractor:

  1. The pain or stiffness in your neck continues for more than a few days.
  2. Severe pain occurs when you attempt to turn your head.
  3. You turn to over-the-counter pain medications to control your pain on a regular basis.
  4. Your pain has moved from your neck and causes numbness or tingling in your hands or wrists.
  5. Pain began within a few days following a car accident or stems from a specific movement or strain such as a fall or heavy lifting.

If you have decided that your neck pain warrants a visit to the chiropractor, here is what you can expect during your first visit. Your chiropractor will locate the source of your neck pain and ask a series of questions including, when did the pain start? How have you been managing the pain? Does the pain radiate to any other parts of your body? Is there anything that makes the pain worse?

Your chiropractor also will perform physical and neurological exams. During the physical exam your posture and range of motion will be observed. Neurological exams test things like reflexes, muscle strength and nerve changes. Tests such as x-rays, CAT scans, EMGs or MRIs may sometimes be necessary.

One of the most common treatments for neck pain are neck adjustments, or cervical manipulation. This procedure allows for precise adjustments to be made to the neck, in most cases by hand. Neck adjustments are an effective way to improve the mobility of the spine while restoring range of motion to the neck. These adjustments are very successful at improving a patient’s ability to move and tilt their head while reducing pain and stiffness.

Many people with chronic or severe neck pain mistakenly believe that they will spend their lives in agonizing pain, require painkillers or will have to undergo complicated surgeries. Thankfully, working with a chiropractor experienced in the treatment of neck pain will show them that this is seldom the case. Instead, they may be surprised to find that with the right chiropractic treatment plan they likely will be able to avoid all three of these scenarios.
